Learning Objectives

Students will demonstrate the ability to capitalize names and titles correctly.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Engage students with an example sentence containing capitalization errors. Question: "I went to mrs. hicks office last week." Instruct students to correct the errors by rewriting the sentence.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Key Idea: Capitalize names of people and pets. Model capitalizing names: Martin, Emmy. Capitalize titles of respect with names (President Carter, Dr. Hicks). Differentiate when not to capitalize titles used as common nouns (a president, the doctor). Solution: "Capitalize Mrs. Hicks. It is a name with a title of respect."

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute Guided Practice Worksheet: Capitalize Names and People. Students circle capitalized names and titles. Practice in pairs or groups.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Distribute Independent Practice Worksheet: Capitalize Names and People. Students match words to pictures, reinforcing capitalization skills.
