Learning Objectives

Students will identify and circle a specific word within a sentence.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin with a question: "What is a sentence made up of?" Show a picture of a dog and say a sentence containing the word "dog." Emphasize the key idea: A sentence is made up of words, and words have spaces between them. Instruct students to listen to the sentence and follow along with each word.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Learn with an Example: Read aloud the sentence: "The dog plays." Show how to identify the word "dog" in the sentence. Emphasize the importance of following along with each word when someone reads to you.

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute the Guided Practice Worksheet: Identify a Word in a Sentence. Students work in pairs or groups to identify and circle the specified word in the sentences.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Distribute the Independent Practice Worksheet: Identify a Word in a Sentence. Students independently identify and circle the specified word. Monitor for misconceptions and intervention needs.
