  • Independent Practice Worksheet Card with the word "mat" for teacher demonstration 

  • Set of picture cards corresponding to words used in the lesson

Learning Objectives

Students will identify the initial letters of words.
Students will understand that words are composed of sounds represented by letters.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Present an example: "Listen to the word 'mat.'" Display a picture of a mat and ask, "Which letter does it start with?" Emphasize the key idea: "Words are made up of sounds." Reinforce the concept that letters represent sounds in words.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Ask a question: "When you write, what do you use to show sounds in a word?" Provide a solution: "Listen to the word 'mat.' It starts with the letter 'm.'"

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute the Guided Practice Worksheet: Determine Starting Letters of Words. In pairs or groups, students will circle the initial letters of words.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Distribute the Independent Practice Worksheet: Determine Starting Letters of Words. Students will match words to pictures by identifying and circling the starting letters.
