Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify and determine words that do not rhyme within a set.

Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of non-rhyming words. Ask students, "Which word does not rhyme?" Show cards with the words wet, pet, and mop to illustrate the challenge.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (10 minutes)

Present an example question: "Which word does not rhyme? Wet, pet, mop." Emphasize the key idea that rhyming words end with the same sound, providing examples like "tin" and "win" or "cup" and "pup." Solve the example by identifying that "wet" and "pet" rhyme because they both end with "et," while "mop" does not rhyme.

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute the Guided Practice Worksheet: "Determine Non-rhyming Words." In pairs or groups, students will circle the non-rhyming words. Provide guidance and support as needed.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Distribute the Independent Practice Worksheet: "Determine Non-rhyming Words." Students will work individually, matching words to their corresponding non-rhyming words. Monitor for misconceptions and provide intervention as necessary.

Differentiation

Support

Provide additional support by offering one-on-one assistance to students who may struggle with identifying non-rhyming words.

Extension

Challenge advanced students by introducing longer word sets with multiple non-rhyming words, encouraging them to create their own sets for identification.

Assessment (5 minutes)

Evaluate student understanding through their participation in guided and independent practice, completion of worksheets, and performance on the exit ticket.

Review and closing (5 minutes)

Summarize the lesson by emphasizing the skill of determining non-rhyming words and its importance in developing phonological awareness.

Misconceptions

Be aware that students may confuse words that look similar but do not rhyme. Reinforce the concept that non-rhyming words end with different sounds.
